Uba Sani: Former civil rights activist who’s now Governor of Kaduna State

Uba Sani is the current Governor of Kaduna State after he officially assumed office on May 29, 2023. Before then, he was the Senator representing Kaduna Central from 2019 to 2023.

Uba Sani was born on December 31, 1970, in the Zaria Local Government area of Kaduna State.

After his primary and Secondary education, Sani attended  Kaduna Polytechnic to study mechanical engineering until the HND level. He proceeded to the University of Abuja for a Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Administration.

Sani also holds a Masters degree in Finance from the University of Calabar.

Sani began his career as an advocate for democracy in Nigeria. He protested against military authoritarianism and was instrumental in developing a strategic base for the pro-democracy movement in Northern Nigeria. His civil society organisation, the Movement for Freedom and Justice, was a platform he used to amplify the voices of the underprivileged.

As a civil rights activist, he worked as the National Vice Chairman (North) of the Campaign for Democracy (CD) and Deputy National Chairman (North) of the Joint Action Committee (JACON).

In 1999, Sani joined partisan politics and was appointed special adviser on public affairs to President Olusegun Obasanjo. He also worked at the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) in an advisory role to the FCT Minister, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai. He later worked in a similar role for the Kaduna State Ministry of Housing and Works.

In 2011, Sani contested in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) primaries for the Kaduna Central Senatorial District seat, but he lost. Then, he was appointed by the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai, as the Special Adviser, Political and intergovernmental affairs in 2015.

In 2019, Sani contested the second time for the Kaduna Central Senatorial District seat under the ruling political party, All Progressives Congress (APC). This time, he won. During his time at the ninth Senate, he sponsored 31 bills, seven of which have been passed.

In 2022, he picked APC nomination forms for the 2023 governorship election in Kaduna State. He won the ruling party’s governorship primary. He subsequently won the 2023 gubernatorial election after defeating his closest rival, Isa Ashiru of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Sani was sworn in as Kaduna State Governor on May 29, 2023.
