Talent has never been in short supply in the Nigerian gospel industry. Through composing, singing, and live performances, musicians, both men and women, have demonstrated their talents. Nigerian gospel artistes combine many components in their songs to highlight the best aspects of the genre.

These artistes preach the gospel and glorify God through their songs which are sung in a conventional, solemn way. However, in recent times, some of these singers also infuse some elements of pop and rock to make the songs trendy to enable them to attract the younger generation to partake in worship.

Sinach

Sinach

Osinachi Kalu, popularly known as Sinach, is without a doubt one of the most well-known gospel performers in Nigeria today. The 47-year-old woman began singing in 1989 and she hasn’t stopped since then.

When her song, I Know Who I Am, was released, she turned into an overnight sensation in Africa. The song was widely played in clubs, as well as in homes, churches, and on the radio. Although she was already well-known in Nigeria, her popularity increased across the continent after the song was released.

Sinach is a lyricist, and performer and was the senior worship leader at Loveworld (Christ Embassy) until 2021. The worship leader also sings The Name of Jesus, Great Are You Lord, Way Maker, Precious Jesus, and Simply Devoted, which are all well-known hymns.

Frank Edwards

Frank Edwards

Frank Edwards has made a name for himself as one of the top gospel performers in West Africa and among the most sought-after artistes in Nigeria. Asides from singing, Edwards also plays a variety of instruments.

Since he was seven years old, he has been a pianist. He distinguishes himself from other modern gospel singers by using a high-pitched voice. Songs by Frank Edwards include You Are Good, I Lift My Voice, Mighty Warrior, and Eze Ndi Eze. Rocktown Records is owned by Edwards, who has signed musicians such as Micah Heavens, Dudu, Nkya, King BAS, and Divine.

Nathaniel Bassey

One of the most renowned voices in the Nigerian gospel scene is Nathaniel Bassey. He has transformed from a youthful artiste to a well-known musician in Africa. Imela, Onise Iyanu, and Olowogbogboro are three of his most well-known songs. His passion for worship has also led him to get involved in numerous home and online ministry endeavours. 

The Hallelujah Challenge on Instagram, where Christians from all walks of life sing, pray and worship God from 12:00 am to 1:00 am, is credited to Bassey. Since it began, the challenge has grown in popularity and now has over 600,000 views.

Mercy Chinwo

Mercy Chinwo

When Mercy Chinwo won Season 2 of Nigerian Idol in 2012, she shot to fame. She was able to enter the entertainment sector more easily after winning the competition. Mercy Chinwo received a part in Yvonne Nelson’s film, House of Gold, a year after winning. Alongside well-known actors like Omawumi and Majid Michel, she performed. 

Chinwo has been singing since she was a young child, although she did not formally debut until 2015. Testimony, one of her songs, was positively appreciated by the public. After releasing Igwe in 2016, her stature in the gospel scene grew and she subsequently signed with the gospel music company, EeZee Conceptz. She has two studio albums to her credit.

Tope Alabi

Tope Alabi

Tope Alabi is an actress, although she does more of singing these days. Alabi was interested in acting before she became a gospel singer. She has collaborated with numerous touring and stage theatre companies in various regions of Nigeria and was formerly a member of the comic troupe, Jesters International. Alabi has a background in mass communication, but her passion for both drama and music was clear. 

Alabi has collaborated with numerous gospel musicians and groups since becoming pro as a musician. She has released gospel tunes that are well-liked by the public. Her most well-known songs are on the mixtape Best of Tope Alabi.

Tim Godfrey

Tim Godfrey

In addition to teaching music, Tim Godfrey also works as a producer, music director, songwriter, and vocal coach. Since 2003, he has performed as a singer for a living. His most well-known song, Nara, features the American gospel musician, Travis Greene.

Godfrey is well recognised for the songs such as Na You Be God, Victory, Miracles Everywhere, Iyo, and Hallelujah. He owns a record label known as Rox Nation and he is also the Founder of Xtreme Crew.

Ada Ehi

Ada Ehi

Ada Ehi is one of Nigeria’s top female singers. When she was 10 years old, she began performing as Tosin Jegede’s backing singer. The 36-year-old started her professional career in 2009, and since then, her music has received tons of attention. She performs at Christ Embassy events all across Europe, America, and Africa as a member of the Christ Embassy choir. 

Undenied, which came out in 2009, and Lifted & So Fly, which came out in 2013, are the two albums that Ehi is known for. Our God Reigns, Only You Jesus, I Overcame, Jesus (You Are Able), and Fix My Eyes on You, in which Sinach was a featured artist, are some of Ehi’s best-known tracks.

Nikki Laoye

Nikki Laoye

One of the most amazing qualities of the Nigerian singer, dancer, humanitarian, songwriter, and actor, Nikki Laoye, is her energy on stage. Everyone who watches her perform live finds her performances to be compelling and moving. In 2005, Nikki began singing professionally. Her sound can be characterised as an urban contemporary mixed with elements of gospel, alternative rock, and soul.

When she released the song Never Felt This Way, she began to gain popularity. The Nigerian government has commended her for her philanthropic work. The founder of the nonprofit organization Angel 4 Life Foundation, Laoye mentors gifted children with disabilities.

Eben

Eben

Eben, whose real name is Emmanuel Benjamin, is a performer, singer, and composer. The 40-year-old began his career as a rapper before becoming a gospel singer. His rise to fame began in 2005 when he showed up at a youth conference that Pastor Chris Oyakhilome had planned. 

Everybody at the conference enjoyed Eben’s performance of the song Imaranma. Two years later, he released his debut album, which included songs by Imaranma, God Dey, Iwo Nikan, and Don Hammer. He released his second album in 2010 and his third in 2013.

Samsong

Samsong

Samson Uche Mogekwu started singing in secondary school, where he got his stage name Samsong. Before his solo career, Samson was a member of the Praise Creation, a quartet which he formed in 1991.

Samsong’s first major project as a solo artist was his debut CD album released in 2002 entitled: Count Your Blessings. Since then, he has released four major albums in 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2015. Samsong is signed to a label called Boogie Down Concept.

Joe Praize

Joe Praize

Joe Praize, born Joseph Omo Ebodage, is a prominent Nigerian worship leader, music director and gospel singer. He was born in Edo State and grew up with his eight siblings. Joseph is a graduate of the University of Jos.

Although he had been doing a bit of singing in the 1990s, Praize released his first gospel song in 2005. His big break came in 2007 when he released Great and Mighty God. His first album entitled: My Praise, was released in 2009.

Mike Abdul

Michael Olayinka Abdul, popularly known as Mike Abdul, is a singer, music producer and songwriter. Abdul, who is also a multi-instrumentalist, has recorded his gospel hits such as Correde, Morire, Iro, Hallelujah, Eyan Jesu, 30 Billion Hallelujah, etc.

He is the founder of Spaghetti Records. Abdul has collaborated with several of his Nigerian gospel artists, producers and gospel preachers, including MoniQue, Tim Godfrey and others.

Dunsin Oyekan

Dunsin Oyekan

Dunsin was born in Ilorin, Kwara State, to a musician father, who also enjoys writing songs. Dancin’s father was instrumental in his son’s musical journey and even taught him to play the guitar. As a result, Dunsin started playing the guitar and singing at the tender age of 10.

Oyekan’s gospel ministry spans Nigeria and several parts of the world. He is known as Eagle by some of his fans for his love of his soul-winning missions. In addition to singing, Oyekan also founded the popular Healing Room Worship Event and Code Red Worship Experience.

TY Bello

Toyin Sokefun-Bello, better known as TY Bello, is a renowned songwriter, singer, philanthropist and accomplished photographer. Her musical journey began when she was still a student when she joined her now-defunct gospel band, KUSH.

Previously, Toyin was part of the music team at her church, Revival World Church. Some of her most popular tracks include Greenland, The Future, Yahweh, and Jesu Jesu.

Steve Crown

Steve Crown

Among the best male gospel singers in Nigeria is Steve Crown. He became well-known after the release of his hugely popular song, You Are Great, Since then, he has performed onstage alongside Don Moen and other accomplished gospel singers.

His musical foundation was established in the Deacon Kids band and chorus at St. John’s Anglican Church. Angels Bow, You Are Yahweh, and We Wait on You are some of his other well-known songs.
