The Finals, the upcoming free-to-play first-person shooter title from Embark Studios, has concluded its open beta. The open beta was highly successful, with an impressive 7.5 million players participating to test the destruction-based game across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. The Finals is developed by industry veterans who have worked on the Battlefield series and features high-octane action in fully destructible environments.
The Finals Open Beta Ends With Record Players
The Finals Open Beta began on October 26 for ten days until November 5, 2023, but ended a day later due to the massive influx as 7.5 million players joined the destructible arena. The game has been very popular recently for its fast-paced action, unique gameplay, and amazing mechanics that captivated players and soon gained enormous popularity.
The Finals Open Beta Hits Huge Numbers but Features Controversial, Rubbish AI CommentaryThe open beta was available across platforms, including PC, via Steam. Xbox Series, and PlayStation 5. The number of players on Steam reached a peak concurrent player count of nearly 300,000 and secured its spot in the top five most-played games. There were so many players during open beta that developers had to bring a login queue to manage the massive player count without causing any issues to the server.
Embark Studios took to the X/Twitter handle of The Finals, celebrating the conclusion of the successful open beta, and thanked the players for helping it identify all the bugs and fixes. It would now work on improvements and polish the game before the launch. It stated:
The Open Beta has come to an end! An unforgettable week for us — a whopping 7.5 MILLION contestants entered the arena! Now it’s time for us to hunker down and get back to work on all the fixes and improvements you helped us identify.
During the open beta, The Finals saw some issues on Xbox and PlayStation causing client crashes, but developers rolled out a fix within hours and resolved it. Players must have found more such issues in the game, and hopefully, they’ll all be ironed out before the full release. The Finals is a multiplayer first-person shooter game where teams of three players engage in battles in destructible environments.
There are three distinct character classes in the game for players to choose from. The character classes are the Light build, the Medium build, and the Heavy build, and they have different pros and cons. The game also features in-game commentary, which makes it stand out among other titles in the packed first-person shooter genre.

The Finals has received some heavy criticism for using AI-generated voiceovers instead of voice actors, but Embark Studios defended this by saying:
The reason that we went this route is that AI text-to-speech is finally extremely powerful. It gets us far enough in terms of quality, and allows us to be extremely reactive to new ideas … if a game designer comes up with a new idea for a game mode, we can have a voiceover representing that in just a matter of hours, instead of months.
Embark Studios has said that it is committed to addressing players’ concerns and will make the overall experience better. Players have surely loved the game so far, as it is already among the five most played games on the Steam list.
Although the developers have not yet announced a specific release date, The Finals is expected to be released this year. The game has some special gameplay features coupled with stunning visuals and has the potential to be the next big thing in the FPS genre.
