PHILADELPHIA (AP)-- The owner of 2004 Kentucky Derby winner "Smarty Jones" has died. Roy Chapman passed away at age 79 today following a long battle with emphysema.Chapman was about to give up on the sport following more than 20 years of breeding and owning horses. That was before Smarty Jones nearly won the Triple Crown, taking the Kentucky Derby and Preakness before falling a length short in the Belmont Stakes.His wife says Chapman died at his home in the Philadelphia suburb of Doylestown.Smarty Jones was retired in the summer of 2004 and stands at Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky. Chapman's wife says the horse was some of the best medicine he had.
