Alexander Bublik received a bye in the first round by virtue of being the fourth seed. The Kazak defeated Altug Celikbilek in the second round in straight sets. He scored another straight sets victory over the fifth seeded Japanese, Yoshihito Nishioka in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he defeated the Romanian, Radu Albot, coming from a set down to produce a comeback victory.

Alexei Popyrin defeated Christopher Eubanks in the first round in straight sets. The Australian had to grind out a three set victory against Adrian Andreev of Bulgaria in three sets in the second round. He defeated fellow Australian, Matthew Ebden in straight sets in the quarterfinals. He defeated the tournament favorite and 2014 US Open champion, Marin Cilic in straight sets in the semifinals. It was a hard fought victory for the Australian as he had to seal both the sets via a tiebreaker.

There is not much to separate the two players ahead of their final clash. Each player has played high quality tennis throughout the week to come this far in the tournament. However, Popyrin has had a great start to the 2021 season, having beaten the likes of David Goffin and Marin Cilic. The match is expected to be a close three set match with Popyrin just edging out the Kazak.
