STATESVILLE, N.C. — NASCAR driver Ryan Newman, who is recovering in a Florida hospital after a terrifying last-lap crash in the Daytona 500, has deep roots in the Charlotte area -- far from the fast life he has established in his racing career.

Newman and his family run a farm and non-profit in the Statesville area. The Rescue Ranch is an animal rescue that promotes education through the learning and caring for animals.

Since 2012, Ryan and Krissie Newman have helped to rescue and rehabilitate hundreds of animals and educate thousands of children.

“I can’t tell you how many times I’ll see Ryan just cruise on by in his tractor and start doing some work out here in his facility and stuff,” Rescue Ranch Executive Director Ed Kinsch said. “A lot of people are into their charities. He is just here.”

Watch the video above as Channel 9′s DaShawn Brown looks at the impact Ryan Newman has had over the years in the Statesville community.
