Posted by Seamonster on Sunday, December 27, 2009 8:22 AM I use drywall compound. Rather than go through the messy procedure of mixing powder and water, I buy a bucket of premixed compound. A bucket will last a long time. The lid fits very tightly, but to keep it from hardening, you can pour a bit of water on the top of the compound and pour it off when you go to use it again. I use it for scenery too. For roads, I smooth it out as best I can (an offset spatula like cooks use for decorating cakes is great for this) then after it sets, I go over it with a wet sponge and get it really smooth. Then I paint it with a grayish black colour.
