Proposal gone wrong: Lady swallows ring hidden in her food for surprise marriage proposal

A surprise marriage proposal nearly resulted in tragedy after a Kenyan lady mistakenly swallowed the engagement ring hidden in her food.

The lady, Jessica Hawayu, and her family had gathered for a family celebration at their home in Gongoni, Tana River County in Kenya. She didn’t know that her boyfriend, Johannah Charo, and her family had planned a surprise marriage proposal.

The plan between her boyfriend and her family was to bury the engagement ring in her plate of food, where she would discover it. Her mother kept sending her off on errands as she was preparing the food and hiding the ring inside.

Meanwhile, Jessica’s boyfriend, Charo and his friends were hanging around town waiting for the signal from his girlfriend’s family once things were set. Later in the day, they received a text asking them to start advancing toward the venue as the tables were set.

Charo snuck into the house without Jessica knowing, and the family gathered around to eat at the dinner table. It was all fun and laughter as he tipped toed towards her chair to surprise her. But the fun was cut short as she suddenly began choking on her food.

Her father hurriedly hit her three times on the back before she threw up the ring.

“We did not anticipate that would happen, but dad feared it would. That was so close, it left mum crying,” Jessica’s kid brother, Oscar Habil, said.

Jessica collapsed and the family quickly rushed her to a nearby hospital for a check-up.

After the near-death experience, she woke up to say “Yes” with the ring already on her finger as her boyfriend insisted he’d marry her whether dead or alive.
