“Probably where he’d finish if there were 84 cars”- NASCAR Twitter reacts to Jimmie Johnson’s car number for Cup series return

Jimmie Johnson will make his second Cup debut in the 2023 Daytona 500. He joined the Legacy Motor Clubs, the former Petty GMS Racing, owners’ group, as a minority stakeholder. Johnson will drive the No:84 Chevy Camaro in the ‘Great American’ race. The new number pays homage to the iconic No:48, in which Johnson won his 7 Cup titles. Alex Bowman is the current piolet of the car.

The team has re-branded itself as Legacy Motor Club to incorporate Johnson into their team’s identity and hopes for an impressive season with Noah Gregson and Erik Jones behind the wheel. Johnson hopes to have a great start to his season at Daytona, and a poor year might dent his legacy in the racing community.  

It is the first time since the 2011 season finale that the No:84 car is being driven in the premier stock racing division.  Johnson is excited about the new era of his career. He said in a statement, “I’m looking forward to a new era in the No. 84 Chevrolet with Legacy M.C. and getting a shot to drive the new Next Gen car this season,”.

Johnson wants to create a new Legacy with the Legacy Motor Club. He said,  “Legacy M.C. will be an inclusive club for the automobile racing enthusiast. I am excited to be a part of a story so rich in heritage and look forward to creating a new legacy in this sport outside of the race car,”.

Twitter reacts to Jimmie Johnson’s new car number

Fans have mixed feeling about the number change though it pays tribute to the no:48 and the fact the veteran is chasing his 84^th Cup race win. Some trolls suggested the possibility of a poor season from the veteran, but most fans were genuinely satisfied with the number’s selection, given the limitations.
