ROCHESTER HILLS, MICHIGAN: A school district has found itself engulfed in controversy after it was reportedly found that during a school trip, students of sixth grade went to a strip club and also did some pole dancing. The alleged incident happened in November but it came to light after a school board’s trustee wrote a blog about it.

Nearly a week ago, the trustee Andrew Weaver shared his thoughts on the incident on a Facebook page, called ‘Finding the Right Answer’, where he wrote, “This past November Rochester Community Schools’ Hart Middle School Band Teacher took 6th-grade students on a field trip to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The students were also taken to lunch at Niki's Pizza which is attached to Niki's Lounge. The students were moved from Niki’s Pizza due to a lack of available space to the Lounge where they tried out some pole dancing.”

Along with the post, a few photos from the incident were also attached. Then again on January 9, Weaver posted another blog but on a different, page called ‘Trustee Andrew Weaver,’ where he explained, “The post in reference was about a Hart Middle School band class field trip. The post was factual and offered no judgment or opinion. The information that was shared came from community members sharing it via social media. The information was not gained through my role as a Trustee."

He continued, “As board members, it is critical that we remain objective and not allow personal biases to influence what concerns we take seriously and which ones we minimize.  While we may all want to believe no one would act intentionally to put students in harm’s way, it would be irresponsible to make a case-specific statement without having considered the details unique to this particular situation.”

He also added, “I look forward to discussing this matter further at an upcoming meeting so the community can be included.  As a board, we need to understand what happened on the field trip was a symptom and not the root cause of the problem. Our responsibility is to ensure the root cause is addressed and that what happened this past November does not happen again. Additionally, we need to know that in the instance in which missteps of any sort inevitably happen, the focus is placed on improving processes, communicating with the community, and resolving the issues at hand.”

Weaver also spoke with Fox News Digital and called out the district for not addressing it. He said, “How did we get here? How do we not just communicate clearly to parents what happened? A mistake was made and address it and make sure that we have the policies in place to prevent it from happening again in the future. It's not a witch hunt. No one's going after anyone. It's really just about how do we make sure that we communicate properly.”

Several people seemed to agree with Weaver as a user commented on Facebook, “I am grateful that this issue has been brought to the surface. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that a school-sponsored field trip would result in children playing on stripper poles.” Another user stated, “Andrew, We appreciate you and all the parents who won’t just brush this under the rug. If this was kept hush-hush and just between the parents who had students there that were privileged enough to find out it would happen again. Those defending it don’t have a leg to stand on. They should be ashamed of themselves. You cannot change things that are kept in the dark.” The third one just said, “Thank you for looking into this matter.” “May I ask when the next school board meeting is? I believe that parents and taxpayers need to let the school know that this is not appropriate!” the fourth user added.

But surprisingly, the school district has nothing to say about the whole fiasco as a statement by a spokesperson reportedly said, “Rochester Community Schools appreciates the strong teacher and caregiver partnerships as we work together to enhance classroom learning opportunities. Parents and caregivers are always encouraged throughout the school year to contact their school administrator with questions or concerns.”

The spokesperson mentioned the trip but added, “Proposed field trips are evaluated by a curriculum team and require a parental/guardian permission slip. RCS may ask parents, caregivers, or other responsible adults to serve as field trip chaperones when appropriate. Adult chaperons are required to complete background checks. The safety and security of our students, staff and school community is always our priority.”
