For football clubs, national teams and their teeming fans, the term “unbeaten run” often gives them unbridled joy and bragging rights.

Knowing that the team you support have not suffered any defeat in matches for a stretch, especially when the feat is current, gives supporters confidence going into the next game. It also allows fans to gloat about their teams’ antecedents, as well as provides a bit of historical context for football pundits during their analysis of matches.

The team with the longest unbeaten run in club football is ASEC Abidjan (ASEC Mimosa) of Cote d’Ivoire. Les Mimos, as the club is popularly known, went 108 games without losing any match between 1989 and 1994.

Under managers Philippe Troussier, Eustache Mangle and Charles Roessli, the Ivorian club achieved this feat in games involving both league and domestic cups. The team dominated the game in the West African country for nearly five years, winning four league titles and three cups during that period.

Longest unbeaten run in international football

Gli Azzurri of Italy have the record of the longest unbeaten run in football. The team achieved the feat of not losing 37 games under its current manager, Roberto Mancini, between 2018 to 2021. The highlight of this achievement for the Italians was their triumph as Euro 2020 winners.

Longest unbeaten run in Premier League history

The longest unbeaten run in the history of the English Premier League is held by Arsenal FC. The North London club went 49 matches unbeaten between May 2003 and October 2004. What is more remarkable is that the Gunners, managed at the time by the French icon, Arsene Wenger, went 38 games, unbeaten in the league, i.e. they enjoyed a full season without tasting defeat.

Arsenal, expectedly, won the 2003-3004 Premier League season mainly due to their unbeaten run.

Longest unbeaten home run in English football

Chelsea FC are the team who have the longest streak of no defeat in home matches in the history of English football. The Blues achieved this for 86 matches from 2004 to 2008 under the spell of different managers.

Longest unbeaten away run in English football

This record currently belongs to Manchester United. The Red Devils avoided defeat in 28 games in 2021 under their immediate former manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Longest unbeaten run in history/all football competitions

The longest unbeaten run record in all football competitions is 108 matches, which was set by the Ivorian giants, ASEC Abidjan (ASEC Mimosa) between 1989 and 1994, as previously mentioned.
