Kashim Ibrahim Shettima is a Nigerian banker and politician. He has served as Borno Central’s Senator since 2019. He previously served as the Governor of Borno State from 2011-2019. He is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and is Bola Tinubu’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election.

Biography

Kashim Shetima was born on September 2, 1966. He is the son of Kashim Ibrahim, former Governor of Northern Nigeria from 1962 to 1966.

Shettima completed his secondary education in 1983 at the Government Science Secondary School, Potiskum (now in neighbouring Yobe State), after attending Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri from 1972 to 1978 and Government Community Secondary School in Biu in the southern part of Borno State from 1978 to 1980. In 1989, he graduated from the University of Maiduguri with a BSc in Agricultural Economics.

From 1989 to 1990, he completed his one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) requirement in the now-defunct Nigerian Agricultural Cooperative Bank in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, in South-South Nigeria. He obtained a Master of Science (MSc) in Agricultural Economics in 1991 at the University of Ibadan in Southwest Nigeria.

Career

He entered the banking industry in 1993 as head of the accounts unit for the now-defunct Commercial Bank of Africa Limited in Ikeja, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria till 1997.

He joined the African International Bank Limited in 1997 as a Deputy Manager and advanced to the position of Manager in 2001. He transferred to the Zenith Bank in 2001 and was the Manager of Maiduguri’s main branch.

Before leaving Zenith Bank in 2007 as a General Manager after being appointed Commissioner for Finance in Borno State, he rose through the ranks at the bank to Senior Manager/Branch Head, Assistant General Manager (AGM)/Zonal Head (North-East), and Deputy General Manager/Zonal Head (North-East).

Shettima was named Commissioner of the Borno State Ministry of Finance and Economic Development in the middle of 2007. Later, under his predecessor Ali Modu Sheriff, he was appointed Commissioner in the ministries of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Education, Agriculture, and later Health.

Kashim Shettima as governor

He worked as a Commissioner in five ministries from 2007 to 2011. Engineer Modu Fannami Gubio was chosen as a candidate for governor in the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) primaries in January 2011. Attackers later killed Gubio, and in February 2011, Shettima won a second primary election. Shettima received 531,147 votes, while Muhammed Goni of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) received 450,140 votes to win the election on April 26, 2011.

He was unquestionably selected as Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, an umbrella group of Governors in the 19 States in Northern Nigeria, after winning re-election in 2015 under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC). With an emphasis on fostering northern unity and restoring struggling industries belonging to northern states, he drove significant changes in the forum’s operations.

Shettima won the titles of Governor of the Year in 2014 (Leadership), Governor of the Year in 2015 (Nigeria Union of Journalists, national body), Governor of the Year in 2016 (Tell magazine), Zik Prize for Leadership, Kaduna NUJ Award for Courage and Exceptional Leadership (2017), and FCT NUJ Merit Award for Exceptional Leadership (2017), among others.

He replaced Senator Babakaka Bashir when he won the Borno Central Senatorial District election in February 2019.

Religion

Kashmir Shettima is a Muslim from Borno State. He is, however, a very hospitable person, especially to people from other religions.

A Hausa man from Zamfara State in the northwest, an Ibo Christian from Anambra State in the southeast, an Urhobo Christian from Delta State in the south-south, a Christian from Edo State in the south-south, a Yoruba Christian from the southwest, a Fulani man from Gombe in the northeast, and a Christian from Edo State in the south-south are among his closest advisors.

Family

Kashim Shettima was born to Sir Kashim Ibrahim’s family in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria. He is married to Nana Shettima, and the two are parents to three kids.

Kashim Shettima and his family live luxuriously and comfortably; his net worth is thought to be more than N1.25 billion ($3m).

Conclusion

On July 10, 2022, Presidential aspirant Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced that Kashim Shettima would be his running mate.

Tinubu made the announcement after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday in Daura, Katsina State.

The news coincides with Ibrahim Kabir Masari’s resignation as the temporary running mate.
