John lived a full life characterized by his selfless service to others and his unbridled passion for the outdoors. He touched countless lives and will be deeply missed.

Early Life and Education

John was born on December 26, 1969 to Elizabeth (Strom) and Frederick M. Hartke, Jr. in Waterford, CT. He grew up alongside his brother Jeffrey, and together they enjoyed an idyllic childhood spent hunting, fishing, and exploring the natural wonders around their hometown.

In 1988, John graduated from Xavier High School. That same year, he led the school's rifle team to a state championship victory—a testament to his impressive marksmanship skills.

Career of Service

After high school, John embarked on a career of public service by becoming a firefighter and EMT for the towns of Haddam and Waterford. He was committed to protecting and assisting his community in times of need. John later brought his skills to Electric Boat before joining Eversource as a Safety Officer—a role through which he could continue helping others.

The Great Outdoorsman

When he wasn't working, John loved nothing more than spending time outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who knew the rivers and forests of Connecticut like the back of his hand. John spent countless hours clamming, crabbing, and walking his beloved dog Chase along the shores near his home.

John also adored the island of Aruba, which became like a second home filled with treasured memories with his family. He was a true lover of nature who appreciated all four seasons in New England, but especially valued his time under the Caribbean sun.

A Devoted Family Man

While John was proud of his career accomplishments, his greatest source of pride was being a loving husband, father, son, and friend. He shared a wonderful marriage with his wife Andrea, with whom he could often be found boating or soaking up the sunshine in Aruba. Together they raised two children, Arianna and Alexander, who were the light of John's life.

John was also extremely close with his parents, Elizabeth and Frederick, and his brother Jeffrey. Anyone who knew John would say he was always just a phone call away whenever you needed him - completely reliable and supportive. His warm, gregarious nature and renowned hospitality will leave a void in the lives of all who knew him.
