Besta TV Unit with Drawers, starting at $294, ikea.com

Don't have a collection of DVDs or various cables to store? No one will be the wiser if you use that extra storage for linens, or seasonal decorations, or other odds and ends you don't have room in your closets for.

Trays

OK, a tray isn't a piece of furniture. But it will help make your other furniture more versatile. And while it's not a major investment, it's probably worth spending more than you think a tray should cost. Something durable (read: high quality) and also pretty can turn your ottoman into a coffee table, perfect for candles, books, and coasters. (When you want to use the ottoman as a foot-rest, just put the tray on the floor.) A tray can also make eating in front of the TV, or even in bed (*Shhhhh, we won't tell! *) easier—and safer for your couch or bedspread.

Kalamos Tray Set of 3, $168, anthropologie.com

Decorate shelves and tabletops with a set of matching trays like these from Anthropologie to create some continuity in your space.

Console Table

A console table is especially great for entryways: Dress yours with a lamp and a leaning mirror or piece of art, but keep one end clear for dropping your purse, mail, and keys when you walk in the door. The thin depth makes them great for hallways or small foyers as well. Don't have a true foyer? A console can serve as a buffet in your dining room, an end table along a stretch of wall in your living room, or even a nightstand in your bedroom. One in a bold hue, like this red console from Target, can add a pop of color to your space that's impactful but not too overwhelming.
