This article is part of a series showcasing the thought leaders who will take the (virtual) stage for Dare to Self-Care, a free event meant to help women everywhere restore their mental, emotional, and physical health—no matter where they are in their wellness journeys. As a wife, a mom of two—well, three if you could her fur child, Blackie—a successful actress, and an influencer with a burgeoning career, Tabitha Brown certainly has a lot of balls in the air. But between it all, she also makes time for restorative self-care. How does she get to a place where she feels relaxed and ready for a good night’s rest? It’s all about her nighttime routine. “I like to let the day go and not think about anything I have to do during the following day,” she says. “It’s so important to just release it and kind of go into deep thoughts.”

We chatted with Brown about her super-chill evening routine—which includes singing in the shower, btw—that de-stresses her and sets her up for success.

My wind-down singing routine

The self-check-in each evening is so important. I get in the shower and check in on myself to make sure there is nothing from my day that has affected me that I am holding onto. So the shower is the time that I check myself that I say, “Okay girl, it’s time to let go of that.” And I sing a fun song in the shower to boost my mood. A lot of the times I sing gospel music, but sometimes I just make the songs up—it’s whatever comes into my spirit and my heart, and I just let it out. I think it’s important to do a good self-talk. People think I’m crazy that I talk to myself and answer back but it’s the ultimate form of self-care. I feel good about myself afterward.

The sleep hacks I swear by

I’m in the process of writing a book so I’m in the mindset as of late where I’m either writing or looking over what I wrote, or journaling and getting my thoughts out. I also love a glass of red wine at night, and I take Ashwagandha gummies to help relax me. So I crawl into my bed and if I’m not doing my writing I do something that some people may find hilarious, but I look at houses on my phone! It’s something to do that doesn’t require thought and it puts me into a nice little relaxing mode to fall asleep. And then I’ll maybe fall into a dream about walking through one of the houses. It’s pleasant to my brain. I also have a massage chair so sometimes I’ll sit in that or I’ll sit on my couch with my dog, Blackie, and I’ll do a little cuddle. That’s the most relaxing thing. I have these new rocking chairs that I got, so he sits on my lap and we rock. I love a good rocking chair. It’s all about winding down.
