Difficulty

I personally recommend playing the game on the easiest difficulty. There are only 2 achievements related to difficulty and it's the same 2 from the first game; destroying white noise. This can be very quickly grinded once you have finished the game and made easier with skills earned from free time and island mode. The other benefit in the first game when playing on hard was that you got more coins. This game is harder this time around on harder difficulties and coins are earned much easier on all difficulties, so I don't see any incentive to playing on harder difficulties unless you wanted the "game" parts of this game to be more challenging.

Gacha Machine and Presents

There's a gacha machine on the beach. Just like in the first game or, if you've played it, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, you put coins in the machine to get a present. Each time you get a unique one, the chance of getting a new one lowers. You can add more coins to increase the chance of, or even guarantee you getting a unique present. I don't personally think this is worth doing as adding more coins barely increases the chance. I think you're better off just spending 1 coin each time until maybe you're down to the last few and you have leftover coins. Speaking of coins...

Coins

There is an achievement for reaching 999 coins. So, try not to spend anything, or large amounts of coins until you earn that achievement. Reaching 999 coins unlocks:

On another note, 999 coins is the cap so anything you earn over that will be lost, so make sure you spend them either on the machine or gallery items (only the first 4 galleries are required for an achievement) so that coins don't go to waste. If you want to be extremely efficient with your coins, you can do what I did, and when you know you're about to earn some coins that would take you over 999, I spent down to the exact number using the gacha machine (which can also be used from the main menu) so that none would be wasted. For example, I was very close to completing one of the pets that gives 300 coins. I was on 864 coins, so not long until my achievement. I found information that this particular pet would give 300 coins (which you can also find in the pets section of this guide) so I used the gacha machine all the way down to 699 coins. That way when I completed the pet in the main story moments later it put me exactly at 999 coins. That way I still got the achievement, and none were wasted. I then immediately saved again, went back to the main menu and spent another 100 or so, that way anymore that I earned from chapter completions weren't wasted. This also gave me plenty of presents to use in the island mode when I got to it.

Free Time

You'll get "free time" at various points throughout story. You can use this time to build relationships with the characters. There's an achievement tied to maxing out each characters report card. Everyone starts with 1 hope fragment and empty slots for 5 more. When you spend time with a character during free time, you'll be asked if you want to give them a gift. The very first time you spend time with someone, always say no as this will still give you their second fragment and saves you a present. After that, every time you give them a present that they "love" you will get another fragment. Once you have all 6 fragments, you'll get an achievement for that character. There isn't enough free time in the main game to do them all, but you can easily do them all during a single run of island mode, provided that you at least did some when you could in your run of the story. 2 final tips I'll mention; firstly, for some reason, talking to or giving gifts to Nagito during the story didn't progress his report card at all during the story. This wasn't a problem in island mode, but I'd avoid working on him during story mode so that you don't waste your free time. Secondly, I'd work on "the heaviest" character first. (Name left out as could be considered a spoiler). He is similar to Celeste from the first game and completing his report card gives you a skill that lets you earn more coins. So, the sooner you have that, the better. Check the Island Life section to see who loves what gifts. When you do get some free time, all characters will be visible on the map so you can see where they are if you're looking for someone in particular.
