In the bleak year of 2020, gamers were met with disappointing news one after another. Some of the most anticipated games were shelved indefinitely, some were pushed to years after, and some were cancelled altogether. So, when Ghost of Tsushima was set for a July 2020 release, gamers were praying for it to be delivered polished. The game, heavily inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s Samurai films, blew the gaming world away with its stunning visuals and beautifully crafted story on a near-end-of-lifecycle PlayStation 4.

With the first game presenting players with the choice of honorably killing Sakai’s uncle, Lord Shimura, or abandoning the Samurai Bushido by sparing Lord Shimura’s life and fully embrace the title of “Ghost”, the game had players torn in its closing minutes. Although the choice seems polarizing, it actually works well to set up the second game in Sucker Punch Productions’ favor. Because regardless of the choice, Jin Sakai turns enemy of the Shogun.

A polarizing choice for Sakai and players alike.

Where could the events of Ghost of Tsushima 2 take place?

The first game established a delicate balance between fantasy and historically accurate setting. The game was contained to the island of Tsushima, but with Sakai having slain Khotun Khan and later being a target of the Shogun, there is every possibility that the second game could have Sakai heading to the Shogun mainland of Japan. The second Mongol invasion could be the driving setting for Sucker Punch. This would not only give players a larger map to explore, but also allow the studio to tantalize us with new weather elements, new enemy types, new stances, and of course, new weaponry.

Jin Sakai could very well face the Shogun head on.

While the second Mongol invasion of the mainland seems like the obvious choice for Sucker Punch, there is perhaps another setting they could dabble with- The Heizenmon Incident of 1293. Since Jin is a “ghostly” target for the Shogun, this setting could prove fruitful too.

With Japan dealing with the aftermath of the second invasion, they were tragically dealt a deadly earthquake around the same time. Amidst all the tumult, in an attempt to prevent any political insurrection or defiance, the Shogun staged a massive coup and killed about 90 subordinates. Amongst the fallen were warriors and clans that were connected to the Adachi family. Given that Lady Masako Adachi was the last of her clan, we might see her familiar face return to aid Sakai and the affected citizens, while perhaps solving her own conflicts.

Lady Masako and Jin Sakai have inner moral conflicts that could be solved together

It’s quite unlikely that Sucker Punch could introduce a new face as the Ghost. Fans loved Sakai’s complexity and wish to see the second game have him explore his inner turmoil treading the line of the Bushido and that of the Ghost. It would also make a compelling narrative to see Sakai deal with the Shogun head-on.

Has Sucker Punch or PlayStation Studios announced a second game in the works?

While neither has made any official announcements, a second Ghost of Tsushima game is very likely. Given that a movie is underway (per Deadline), and a director’s cut of the game was released as well, a sequel game seems inevitable. Additionally, eagle-eyed fans noted job listings that fit the requirements for a sequel, stating needs for “Feudal Japan” history knowledge, and brownie points for anyone “comfortable working with ninjas and the like”.

While we wait giddy in anticipation for a sequel, PlayStation Studios might just have to satiate our thirst with a PC release for the first game. And again, everyone’s been tight-lipped about this release as well. Given the phenomenal reception to Spider-Man, Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, God of War (2018) and The Last of Us PC ports, a Ghost of Tsushima port should be in due time. While there are leaks and rumors abound, take it all with a sip of sake, and for now, enjoy the game available digitally on the PlayStation store.
