Football has been a major sport in Nigeria and the most popular among others. Just like the popular English Premier League, the country’s professional league competition has been in action over the years and has tons of fans around the continent. The league is contested by a total of 20 teams, who all battle for the league’s title each season. One of the most prominent football clubs in the Nigerian league is Enyimba Football Club of Aba. Since its creation in 1976, the team has remained relevant to this day, proving itself to be a dominant force amongst its counterparts but locally and on the African continent.
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has been home to several outstanding football players for over five decades. Several stars who plied their trade for the clubs at various times have played for the country’s national football team, the Super Eagles.
So, who are Enyimba F.C., the only club that has achieved continental glory and acclaim for Nigeria? Can they replicate that continental glory any time soon?

Enyimba Football Club is a Nigerian football club based in Aba, the commercial capital of Abia State. The team was formed in 1976 by Jerry Amadi Enyeazu, the then-Director for Sports in the newly established Imo State. However, when Imo State was divided in 1991 to form Abia State, the city of Aba, where Eyimba was based, fell under the geographical area of Abia State, making it an Abia-owned club.

The term “Enyimba” is an Igbo word that translates to “the people’s elephant” in English. Having the commercial metropolis of Aba as its home, they are, therefore, referred to as “Enyimba of Aba,” or, in other words, “The Elephants of Aba.”
The story of Enyimba Football Club’s success did not happen overnight; the club struggled in the league during the first few years of its establishment. It started gaining little attention in 1990 when the Nigerian Professional League was established. Enyimba finished 13th out of 16 teams in their inaugural season, winning only five of 30 games. The next season, despite winning eight games, they ended 15th on the log with 36 points.
Due to their less-than-impressive performance, the team was demoted in 1992 and remained in the relegated division for two consecutive seasons until 1995, when they returned to the professional league.
Success stories
Enyimba began to achieve significant success in 1999 after receiving funding from the newly-elected governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu. In 2001, the newly-hired coach, Godwin Koko Uwa led the team to their first-ever Nigerian League title, which was followed by the Super Cup the following year. The victories marked the start of the club’s dominance in Nigerian club tournaments.
Enyimba first appeared in CAF tournaments in 2002, when it competed in the CAF Champions League. Despite being ousted in the second round by the Ivory Coast’s ASEC Mimosas, all eyes were on the Elephants of Aba owing to their remarkable accomplishments in the Nigerian league.
Enyimba went on to win the CAF Champions League for the first time in 2003, defeating the Egyptian club, Ismaily to become the first Nigerian club to win the continent’s most prestigious football competition title.
That same year, the club won the title of “best team in Africa,” while its coach at the time (Kadiri Ikana) was named “best coach”. They followed that up with another victorious CAF victory in 2004, cementing their position as the most powerful football club on the continent.
Enyimba Football Club has won eight Nigerian Premier League championships (2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009/10, 2015, 2019), four Nigerian FA Cup victories (2005, 2009, 2013, 2014), and four Nigeria Super Cup titles (2001, 2003, 2010, 2013). In terms of international achievement, the squad has two CAF Champions League championships (2003, 2004) and two CAF Super Cup victories (2004, 2005).
Enyimba’s last CAF competition win
There is no denying their past performances in previous competitions organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Enyimba’s greatest triumph is on the African continent. Before the turn of the millennium, no Nigerian club had won the CAF Champions League, the continent’s most illustrious football club competition. But under coach Kadiri Ikhana, the club won its first (and Nigeria’s) maiden Champions League in 2003; and repeated the same feat under coach Okey Emordi a year later. Also in its trophy cabinet are two CAF Super Cup trophies.
However, Enyimba have yet to win a CAF competition since its CAF Super Cup victory in 2005 against Accra Hearts of Oak, nearly 17 years ago. Many football fans are hoping that the team will return to win the championship in the coming years, and we can only wait and see what the future holds for The People’s Elephants.
Did Enyimba qualify for any CAF competition in 2023?
Despite being placed as the highest Nigerian club side in the newest Confederation of African Football ranking (2022), Enyimba are not among the clubs competing in the present CAF Champions League campaign.
However, in August 2022, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) proposed a new tournament dubbed the Africa Super League, in which 24 clubs would compete in three groups of eight teams, followed by a knockout round beginning with the Round of 16. The competition is set to begin in August 2023, with Enyimba among the clubs reportedly set to compete in the inaugural competition organised by CAF.
Can Enyimba win a CAF competition anytime soon?
Enyimba have repeatedly shown themselves to be deserving of every accolade bestowed upon them. Apart from being the most decorated team in Nigerian professional football league history, Enyimba boasts a current powerhouse roster of excellent defenders and three brilliant forwards in Chukwuemeka Obioma, Sadiq Adamu, and Samuel Kalu, who have all demonstrated their brilliance on the field of play in the past.
With the squad managed by ex-Super Eagles international, Finidi George, there is a great chance that the club would succeed in the CAF Africa Super League tournament proposed for 2023 and could even win the event’s maiden title, thereby creating history once more.
