The main reason why Ekweremadu and his wife were arrested was over allegation of organ harvesting. Organ harvesting is a surgical procedure that removes human organs or tissues for reuse.
The former deputy senate president and his wife have been accused of trying to arrange the travel of a child with a view to harvesting the organs of the minor.

Ekweremadu and his wife are also facing charges of child trafficking. Child trafficking involves the practice of relocating children for exploitation or slavery. The police said Ekweremadu is facing potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022.
