As a volleyballer, I would often revert to an underarm serve if the pressure was on or the overarm was failing and do two things. One was to lick my finger and moisten the valve. The second was to ensure I hit the valve on serve. The amount of weird swerve (early, late) I got often bamboozled the receivers and the psychological damage you do to a team when they are failing to return underarm serves is massive.
