If the Emmys red carpet is anything to go by, copper red hair is the color for fall 2022.
The shade and its countless variations, like pumpkin spice, ginger peach, and chocolate cherry, were already in vogue for the season. Now everyone from Zendaya to Issa Rae to Lily James have debuted their own takes on the hue on the red carpet, making copper coin the undisputed winner of the evening. “It’s the perfect way to incorporate shades of copper and caramel to create a natural dimensional look," Lorena M. Valdes, hair colorist at Chicago’s Maxine Salon, tells Glamour, adding that she highly recommends this shade for brunettes that love seeing warmth in their hair. “From chestnut to caramels and coppers, it works so well, and most don’t depend on a gloss, since color can be used to highlight."
As for how to get the look? Valdes recommends opting for multicolored highlight, as this will provide different ribbons of colors from roots to ends, ensuring longevity and a softer grow-out. “It can also be done with balayage for thicker ribbons of color,” she explains.
That said, if you’re starting from a blond shade, a gloss is your best bet when it comes to trying any shade of red, according to Jenna Perry, celebrity colorist and owner of Jenna Perry Hair Studio in New York City. “I like glosses for everyone, but mostly for people who don’t want to or aren’t quite ready to fully commit,” Perry says. “Glosses are not permanent, there is no damage to the hair, and they add shine and depth. It’s also good for in-between coloring and for refreshes—it stretches the longevity.”
