Matt Damon and Jimmy Kimmel have been involved in a friendly feud for quite some time now. First starting in 2005, the talk show host was ending an episode and randomly decided to say, on the spot, that he apologized to Matt Damon, they did not have enough time to do his interview. This wasn’t the case as the actor wasn’t even scheduled to make an appearance. Kimmel revealed why he said this, stating that he just spoke out the name of the biggest celebrity he could think of, who happened to be the Oppenheimer star.
This turned into a running gag, happening frequently on his show, and even making its way outside of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, with the two speaking ill of each other in any interview either of them appeared. While this initially started as a joke from Kimmel’s side, the first participation that Damon took was through making a music video that featured the talk show host’s girlfriend at the time, Sarah Silverman, which was followed up by a response video from Kimmel’s side, that featured the actor’s good friend, Ben Affleck. During an interview, the Batman actor revealed that this was one of the highlights of his career.
Matt Damon Pulled A Prank On Jimmy Kimmel
Matt Damon gave an extensive and comprehensive interview with GQ. Here, he spoke in great detail about a lot of very important aspects of his life, including his ‘feud’ with Jimmy Kimmel, more, specifically the music video that he made with the talk show host’s then-girlfriend, Sarah Silverman, which implied that Damon was being intimate with her. The actor revealed what prompted him to create the music video like this. He revealed that while working on his film, The Bourne Ultimatum, he started to ponder on how he could keep this joke that the talk-show host had started, alive.
“We had done The Bourne Ultimatum [spoof] with [Kimmel sidekick] Guillermo [as Jason Bourne]. Like, now Jimmy’s kicking me out of my own movies? And we all were just like, “How do we keep this thing alive?” And the guy who directed that called with this idea that Sarah had given him.” To which Silverman added, “Matt came in, learned the song in a closet of the hotel we had, and then we had three hours with him to shoot because he had his daughter’s Halloween pageant at noon.”
It was here that he came across the perfect plan. Silverman explained that she came up with this entire idea and Damon showed up on set to film this, for which he only had three hours, as he had to attend an event for his daughter. After this was over and the actor was on his way to his child, he thought of how he was too old to be behaving like this. Funnily enough, this joke went on for years after this.
Jimmy Kimmel Retaliated
After Matt Damon explained his side of the story, Ben Affleck spoke up, saying that he knew the moment he saw this video that eventually he would get involved in a similar version of it, being an extremely close friend to the actor. Thinking ahead, he decided to call Jimmy Kimmel himself. After this phone call, things were set into motion and never people already working on this version, which insinuated that Kimmel had been intimate with Affleck.
“As soon as I saw “I’m F*cking Matt Damon,” I knew I would be doing “I’m F*cking Ben Affleck.” So I called Jimmy, and they were already putting it together. Having Josh Groban yelling out, “I’m f*cking Beeeeen. I’m f*cking Ben Affleck!” remains a high point of my career and life.”
The actor explained that having the singer and actor, Josh Groban, yell out the lyrics of the song, which were pretty much just profanities, was extremely hilarious for him. He added that this was so funny that he would call this one of the highest points of his career, including the time that he won an Oscar.
