Garbine Muguruza breezed past World No.77 Clara Burel 6-3,6-4 in the first round. The Spaniard capitalized on errors from Clara who made 28 unforced errors and had 12 double faults. Muguruza dominated her opponent with her superior net play and powerful groundstrokes. Muguruza won the first set comfortably even after dropping one service game. In the next set, Clara came close to forcing a third set when came back from 5-2 down to make it 5-4. But Muguruza won the next game to win the match on her fifth match point.

Alize Cornet avoided a third consecutive opening round defeat this year, as she defeated Viktoriya Tomova in straight sets. In a match which lasted 1 hour and 33 minutes, both the opponents traded break of serves in both the sets, but Cornet managed to just edge out the Bulgarian who had only 9 winners in the entire match.
