Whether you’re looking for dewy skin, oil-free coverage, or some good, old-fashioned UV protection, the best tinted moisturizers with SPF have got you (and your face) covered. These multipurpose products check all the beauty boxes, providing ample hydration, sheer-to-medium lightweight coverage, and SPF in one, making them an easy-to-apply essential in every beauty routine.
“A tinted moisturizer refers to product that moisturizes the skin by hydrating the skin, while also providing some tinted coverage to help naturally camouflage blemishes and even out the appearance of skin tone and texture,” Marisa Garshick, MD, board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology, tells Glamour. “In some cases, tinted moisturizers may also provide UV protection, in which case they would be labeled with an SPF. These are are a great multitasking product for someone who doesn’t like to apply or wear heavy makeup, as it often provides some light coverage without adding an extra step to a routine.”
Makeup artists are fans too. “Tinted moisturizers are amazing for anyone on the go—they are easy to apply with your fingers and activate with the warmth of your skin,” says hair and makeup artist Danni Katz. “They are known for having soft coverage, but they still give you that healthy glow we all know and crave. I especially love them for daytime, as quite a few have SPF.”

How does tinted moisturizer differ from foundation or tinted sunscreen?
While similar, tinted moisturizers with SPF aren’t foundation or tinted sunscreen—they’re more like skin care’s take on the two. “Tinted moisturizers are formulated to hydrate and nourish the skin while also providing a softer more natural coverage,” says Azadeh Shirazi, MD, board-certified dermatologist at La Jolla Dermatology. “They’re different than makeup as they tend to be more water-based rather than oil-based, with lighter formulas. I consider them skin care products with a slight color tone.” You can essentially think of them as multipurpose moisturizers, as opposed to makeup or sunscreen that so happen to hydrate.
Tinted moisturizers also differ in terms of coverage and finish. “Tinted moisturizer is a lightweight, sheer, nourishing, and hydrating hybrid of foundation and skin care. This product is all about the no-makeup makeup look and is perfect for anyone that wants to keep their skin looking like skin,” makeup artist pro Nick Lujan tells Glamour. “The benefit is a natural skin-like finish with just enough coverage to balance out mild redness and concerns.”
What tinted moisturizer is right for my skin type?
The best tinted moisturizer for you depends on what you want out of the product. If you have sensitive skin, for example, Dr. Garshick encourages opting for fragrance-free formulas to minimize potential for irritation or sensitivity. If you’re seeking additional moisture or have mature skin, she suggests hydrating ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid; skin-soothing ingredients like niacinamide, green tea extract, and aloe vera; emollients like squalane to soften and soothe the skin; and barrier-boosting ingredients like ceramides. “Additionally, some that deliver antioxidant benefits can be especially helpful for those with mature skin to provide added protection throughout the day against free radical damage,” says Dr. Garshick.
